For example, IPv6 uses the Next Header field to select the correct transport layer protocol module, as Figure 2 illustrates. Volume two of this series, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2: The Implementation, covers the implementation of TCP/IP. The Lions book and TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2, show good coding, and are at least written in C, though again the code is rather old by today's standards. Volume 2: The Implementation, contains a thorough explanation of how TCP/IP protocols are implemented.
