Comprehensive in scope, based on a working standard, and thoroughly illustrated. TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols features clear discussions and well-designed figures. Are there any modern code bases that are helpful to Lance R. Figure 2: Demultiplexing at Layer 2. For example, IPv6 uses the Next Header field to select the correct transport layer protocol module, as Figure 2 illustrates. Volume two of this series, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2: The Implementation, covers the implementation of TCP/IP. TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2 contains a thorough explanation of how TCP/IP protocols are implemented. I'll try to address your questions here, but I also recommend referencing Wright and Stevens' TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 2, which dedicates an entire chapter to ARP implementation. This is also getting a bit long in the tooth, but “A Retargetable C Compiler: Design and Implementation” by Fraser and Hanson is a good read and another example of Knuth's “Literate Programming” presentation style. The Lions book and TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2, show good coding, and are at least written in C, though again the code is rather old by today's standards. Volume 2: The Implementation, contains a thorough explanation of how TCP/IP protocols are implemented.
